Golden Globes 2016 – The Fashion

Golden Globes 2016 - The Fashion

You can’t have a major awards show without the fashion critiques, and this year I saw a lot of dresses that I really liked, along with a few that did nothing for me or the person wearing them.

The big trends of the night I noticed were deep plunging necklines, metallic and sequined fabrics, and lots of nude colors.

So let’s start with my favorites of the night:

Melissa McCarthy – So many great things about her custom-made dress. From the purple metallic fabric to the great wrap-style cut, this dress was made to flatter a women with curves. I’m excited to hear a variation of this dress might appear in a future collection of her fashion line. I would definitely wear this.

Sunrise Coigney – Her husband Mark Ruffalo was the nominated one, but there was so much win in her dress, from the geometrical beading to the subtly sheer panels. If I wore it, I’d want longer sleeves, but this is an amazing dress that completely flatters her.

Viola Davis – This dress could’ve taken a turn into the grandmotherly arena, but the tasteful addition of sheer panels elevates this Marchesa dress into a showstopper. It made Viola stand out in a sea of strapless dresses. I’d totally wear this dress.

Julianne Moore – Her beautiful deep blue sparkly Tom Ford dress fit like a glove and made her look amazing. From the fabric to the shoulder cut-out to the plunging back, this dress was a stunner.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Brie Larson – This Best actress winner shimmered in a gold custom-made Calvin Klein with unusual cut-outs. It totally flattered her, rather than overwhelming her, like it could have. A risky move that paid off.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Amy Adams – The actress stepped outside of her normal blue awards dress comfort zone with this figure-hugging Atelier Versace gown in a bright coral-red, and scored a major win. Everything about this dress from the color to the cut flattered her, and I like the waist accents.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Kate Bosworth – the actress wore dark pink sequin-embellished Dolce & Gabbana gown that was a stunner and made her look amazing. She smartly toned down the hair and jewelry so they wouldn’t compete with the dress and overwhelm the eyes.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Lily James – This off-white Marchesa with an asymmetrical top made Lily look like a Grecian goddess. Everything about this look was a win for me.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Now for the ones I didn’t like and near-misses:

Amanda Peet – This dress reminded me of the much-maligned dress Gwyneth Paltrow wore years back. The color washed her out, the cut didn’t flatter her, and it just made her look dowdy.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Jane Fonda – For the most part, this white Yves Saint Laurent Couture by Hedi Slimane gown was a flattering outfit, but the top portion had a few too many ruffles. It looked like she threw on a window valance to cover up with, and it totally overwhelmed her.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Taylor Schilling – Despite the sparkles, this outfit looked like pajamas on her, especially with the hair pulled up. This outfit wasn’t in any way flattering on her.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Natalie Dormer – Normally Natalie shines at award shows, but this dress just didn’t flatter her. The top part of the dress was interesting, but then the skirt did nothing for her with all the pleats. The messy hair didn’t help either.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Rooney Mara – Same problem as Amanda Peet…the nude color of this Alexander McQueen dress washed her out, and all the ruffles didn’t flatter her body either. It kinda looked like a cat shredded it while it was on her.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

So those are my fashion picks for the 2016 Golden Globes. Tell me which ones were your favorites and which you didn’t like…but remember constructive criticism is better than just slamming the outfit.
