This morning the annual Golden Globes nominees were announced by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), and there are a lot of interesting choices.
There are also a lot of surprising snubs. I can’t believe Wonder Woman didn’t get any recognition, especially for director Patty Jenkins. Also snubbed was Greta Gerwig for directing Lady Bird (though she did get a nomination for writing it).
Also not receiving nominations were Tracy Ellis Ross for black-ish, even though her co-star Anthony Anderson got a nod, as did the show. Same for Debra Messing of Will and Grace, despite the show and co-star Eric McCormack getting nominated.
But woulda-coulda-shoulda, there are still a lot of great performances and projects that got nominations this year.
Here is the complete list of 2018 Golden Globes nominees, along with my semi-educated best guesses for who will walk away with the statue:

MOTION PICTURES
Best Motion Picture, Drama
- “Call Me by Your Name”
- “Dunkirk”
- “The Post”
- “The Shape of Water”
- “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
It’s going to come down to “The Post” and “Three Billboards…” – I’m going to say “The Post” for its star power (Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks).
Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy
- “The Disaster Artist”
- “Get Out”
- “The Greatest Showman”
- “I, Tonya”
- “Lady Bird”
While I’m happy to see the horror film “Get Out” get a nod, I think “Lady Bird” and “I, Tonya” will duke it out with “Lady Bird” getting the win.
Best Director, Motion Picture
- Guillermo del Toro, “The Shape of Water”
- Martin McDonagh, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
- Christopher Nolan, “Dunkirk”
- Ridley Scott, “All the Money in the World”
- Steven Spielberg, “The Post”
All are great movies, but I think the nod will go to Spielberg (though Nolan could surprise).
Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama
- Jessica Chastain, “Molly’s Game”
- Sally Hawkins, “The Shape of Water”
- Frances McDormand, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
- Meryl Streep, “The Post”
- Michelle Williams, “All the Money in the World”
Such brilliant performances, but I think Sally Hawkins will win this one.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy
- Judi Dench, “Victoria & Abdul”
- Helen Mirren, “The Leisure Seeker”
- Margot Robbie, “I, Tonya”
- Saoirse Ronan, “Lady Bird”
- Emma Stone, “Battle of the Sexes”
I think it comes down to Margot and Saoirse, but I’m gonna give it to Robbie for her amazing transformation into Tonya Harding.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture
- Mary J. Blige, “Mudbound”
- Hong Chau, “Downsizing”
- Allison Janney, “I, Tonya”
- Laurie Metcalf, “Lady Bird”
- Octavia Spencer, “The Shape of Water”
While early bets were on Laurie Metcalf, I think this one is all Allison Janney.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama
- Timothée Chalamet, “Call Me by Your Name”
- Daniel Day-Lewis, “Phantom Thread”
- Tom Hanks, “The Post”
- Gary Oldman, “Darkest Hour”
- Denzel Washington, “Roman J. Israel Esq.”
This is a career-defining performance for Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill, and I think he’ll get the win.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy
- Steve Carell, “Battle of the Sexes”
- Ansel Elgort, “Baby Driver”
- James Franco, “The Disaster Artist”
- Hugh Jackman, “The Greatest Showman”
- Daniel Kaluuya, “Get Out”
I was surprised by Elgort’s nod, but I think James Franco will win for his quirky performance.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture
- Willem Dafoe, “The Florida Project”
- Armie Hammer, “Call Me by Your Name”
- Richard Jenkins, “The Shape of Water”
- Christopher Plummer, “All the Money in the World”
- Sam Rockwell, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
I was also surprised by Dafoe’s nod, but I think Armie Hammer will walk away with the win.
Best Screenplay, Motion Picture
- Guillermo del Toro and Vanessa Taylor, “The Shape of Water”
- Greta Gerwig, “Lady Bird”
- Liz Hannah and Josh Singer, “The Post”
- Martin McDonagh, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
- Aaron Sorkin, “Molly’s Game”
I haven’t seen “Molly’s Game,” but Aaron Sorkin writes the type of scripts that HFPA enjoys, so I think he’ll win.
Best Original Score, Motion Picture
- Carter Burwell, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
- Alexandre Desplat, “The Shape of Water”
- Jonny Greenwood, “Phantom Thread”
- John Williams, “The Post”
- Hans Zimmer, “Dunkirk”
John Williams is a HFPA favorite, so I think he’ll win this.
Best Original Song, Motion Picture
- “Home” — “Ferdinand” (Nick Jonas, Justin Tranter, Nick Monson)
- “Mighty “River” — “Mudbound” (Mary J. Blige, Raphael Saadiq, Taura Stinson)
- “Remember Me” — “Coco” (Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez)
- “The Star” — “The Star” (Mariah Carey, Marc Shaiman)
- “This is Me” — “The Greatest Showman” (Benj Pasek, Justin Paul)
I don’t think “Mudbound” will win its other categories, but it has a good chance to win for this.
Best Motion Picture, Animated
- “The Boss Baby”
- “The Breadwinner”
- “Coco”
- “Ferdinand”
- “Loving Vincent”
No contest – “Coco” by Disney*Pixar was an amazing movie and I think it’ll win this award.
Best Motion Picture, Foreign Language
- “A Fantastic Woman”
- “First They Killed My Father”
- “In the Fade”
- “Loveless”
- “The Square”
I haven’t seen any of these, so I’m not qualified to guess.
TELEVISION
Best Television Series, Drama
- “The Crown,” Netflix
- “Game of Thrones,” HBO
- “The Handmaid’s Tale,” Hulu
- “Stranger Things,” Netflix
- “This Is Us,” NBC
It’s a tight race between “The Crown” and “The Handmaid’s Tale” – both are the type of dramas HFPA tends to favor. I’ll give the edge to “The Handmaid’s Tale” which swept the Emmy’s earlier this year.
Best Television Series, Musical or Comedy
- “black-ish,” ABC
- “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” Amazon
- “Master of None,” Netflix
- “Smilf,” Showtime
- “Will & Grace,” NBC
Surprise nod for Mrs. Maisel but after more than 20 past nods, I think the revival of “Will & Grace” will edge out “black-ish” for the win.
Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
- “Big Little Lies,” HBO
- “Fargo,” FX
- “Feud: Bette and Joan,” FX
- “The Sinner,” USA Network
- “Top of the Lake: China Girl,” SundanceTV
I think the Emmy-winning “Big Little Lies” will continue it’s winning streak here.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, Drama
- Caitriona Balfe, “Outlander”
- Claire Foy, “The Crown”
- Maggie Gyllenhaal, “The Deuce”
- Katherine Langford, “13 Reasons Why”
- Elisabeth Moss, “The Handmaid’s Tale”
I think Elisabeth Moss will continue her Emmy win with one here as well.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy
- Pamela Adlon, “Better Things”
- Alison Brie, ”Glow”
- Rachel Brosnahan, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”
- Issa Rae, “Insecure”
- Frankie Shaw, “Smilf”
Happy to see Brie get a nod in this category for Netflix’s “Glow,” but I think Rachel Brosnahan will win for her Amazon show.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
- Jessica Biel, “The Sinner”
- Nicole Kidman, “Big Little Lies”
- Jessica Lange, “Feud: Bette and Joan”
- Susan Sarandon, “Feud: Bette and Joan”
- Reese Witherspoon, “Big Little Lies”
Another category with really strong performances, but I think Nicole Kidman, who won the Emmy for this role, will win this award, too.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
- Laura Dern, “Big Little Lies”
- Ann Dowd, “The Handmaid’s Tale”
- Chrissy Metz, “This Is Us”
- Michelle Pfeiffer, “The Wizard of Lies”
- Shailene Woodley, “Big Little Lies”
I think Laura Dern will repeat her Emmy win here, as well.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series, Drama
- Jason Bateman, “Ozark”
- Sterling K. Brown, “This Is Us”
- Freddie Highmore, “The Good Doctor”
- Bob Odenkirk, “Better Call Saul”
- Liev Schreiber, “Ray Donovan”
I have been loving Freddie Highmore’s performance on his new show, but I think Bob Odenkirk will nab the win here.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy
- Anthony Anderson, “black-ish”
- Aziz Ansari, “Master of None”
- Kevin Bacon, “I Love Dick”
- William H. Macy, “Shameless”
- Eric McCormack, “Will & Grace”
I think the revival of “Will & Grace” will give Eric McCormack his first Golden Globes award, though Anthony Anderson is hilarious on “black-ish.”
Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
- Robert De Niro, “The Wizard of Lies”
- Jude Law, “The Young Pope”
- Kyle MacLachlan, “Twin Peaks”
- Ewan McGregor, “Fargo”
- Geoffrey Rush, “Genius”
Geoffrey Rush gave the type of performance HFPA tends to favor so I look for him to win this one.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
- David Harbour, “Stranger Things”
- Alfred Molina, “Feud: Bette and Joan”
- Christian Slater: “Mr. Robot”
- Alexander Skarsgard: “Big Little Lies”
- David Thewlis: “Fargo”
I think it’ll be a “Big Lies” sweep for Alexander Skarsgard, though Christian Slater could pull an upset.
