I’ll admit, when I first heard they were doing Toy Story 4, I was worried they might be going to the well too many times. But I recently had the chance to preview the movie, and I think it’s a welcome sequel.
As the film opens, Woody (voice of Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (voice of Tim Allen), and the rest of the toys now belong to a young girl named Bonnie. When Bonnie’s beloved new craft-project-turned-toy, Forky (voice of Tony Hale), declares himself as “trash” and not a toy, Woody takes it upon himself to show Forky why he should embrace being a toy.
Meanwhile, Bonnie decides to take the whole gang on her family’s road trip excursion, and Woody ends up on an unexpected detour that includes a reunion with his long-lost friend Bo Peep (voice of Annie Potts), and kidnapping plot orchestrated by a vintage doll named Gabby Gabby (voiced by Christina Hendricks).
With the help of Bo’s friend Duke Caboom (voiced by Keanu Reeves), and Buzz’s new carnival toy friends, Ducky (voiced by Keegan-Michael Key) and Bunny (voiced by Jordan Peele), Woody sets out to reunite his friends and make Forky realize he is worthy of being a toy.
The laughs are plenty in Toy Story 4, which is a major part of why the movie works so well. From sight gags (love the “skunk”) to nods to toys adults will be more familiar with than the kids (like Gabby’s henchmen), this movie is funny from start to finish.
Special nod to Key and Peele, who use their long-running real-life friendship to make Ducky and Bunny so over the top hilarious.
But this movie also has several tearjerker moments, as Woody has some tough decisions to make during the course of the story. To say any more I’d have to invoke the dreaded spoilers, but trust me…you’ll want to bring a tissue or two.
Toy Story 4 will make you laugh, and it’ll make you shed some bittersweet tears, then it’ll make you laugh some more. By the end, I think you’ll agree it’s a sequel that we actually needed, and a worthy addition to the Toy Story legacy.
