In the Shadow of the Moon - 2019 movie

Crime thriller In the Shadow of the Moon begins in 1988 as police officer Thomas Lockhart (Boyd Holbrook) and his partner, Maddox (Bokeem Woodbine), investigate a case with Lockhart’s brother-in-law, Detective Holt (Michael C. Hall).

People are dying in a strange way that leaves puncture wounds on their necks, but Lockhart can’t quite figure out how the killer is doing it.

Clues lead them to a woman (Cleopatra Coleman), but the ensuing chase and fight in a subway station leads to the suspect’s death.

Nine years later, in 1997, an apparent copycat begins another killing spree. Lockhart, now a detective caring for his young daughter Amy after the death of his wife, can find no apparent motive or connection between the victims.

Even stranger, one of the items in evidence from 1988 matches an aircraft that wasn’t manufactured until 1996. They go to the airport only to come face to face with the same suspect that died in 1988.

This is when the movie veers into sci-fi, as Lockhart is also confronted by Rao (Rudi Dharmalingam), a physicist who insists this is proof of time travel.

The film then jumps another nine years to 2006, where Lockhart in now a private investigator living in his car, and obsessed with solving the case…one which he ends up having a very personal connection with.

I can’t say anymore without giving away the ending, but it wraps up with an interesting twist, and a second chance for Lockhart.

In the Shadow of the Moon is an ambitious story, though it mostly works with leaps of faith from the viewer. The acting and script are decent, and it offers up a good mystery.

I’m giving In the Shadow of the Moon a 3 out of 5. It’s streaming on Netflix.
