Movie still from Girl starring Bella Thorne

Fantastic Fest, hosted by the Alamo Drafthouse, has gone virtual for 2020, and the second night’s main film was Girl, starring Bella Thorne, Mickey Rourke, and Chad Faust (who also directed and wrote the screenplay).

In Girl, Thorne plays the titular character, a young woman who returns to her small hometown intent on killing her abusive father, only to discover someone else got to him first.

As she searches for answers, the young woman uncovers a family legacy more dangerous than imagined…one that might get her killed. The Sheriff (Rourke) is untrustworthy from the introduction, and is working with a redneck local (Faust) who may be involved in her daddy’s murder.

Girl is a revenge story of sorts, but it starts out with bad dialogue and scenes that feel very disjointed. Once all three characters are in play, the movie seemed to find its rhythm and became more interesting.

Overall, the movie is a no-frills thriller. The acting and the action are decent…the dialogue and character development, not so much. And I found the twist reveal interesting, along with Betty, the character who delivered it (played by Lanette Ware).

Girl is not a bad film, but you need to be willing to sit through the first 35 minutes or so for things to get really interesting. I’m giving Girl a 2.5 out of 5 rating.
