Evil Eye is part of a quartet of Blumhouse horror films released on Amazon

Evil Eye is part of a quartet of Blumhouse horror films released on Amazon in October 2020, and tells the tale of an Indian family that seems doomed to repeat a terrible historical event.

The movie opens with a man stalking a woman in India. He confronts her on the bridge, and in the altercation, he ends up falling into the river and dying.

Fast forward to the present. We meet Pallavi (Sunita Mani), who lives in America but talks to her mother Usha (Sarita Choudhury) in India every day. She is about to turn 29, and her mother keeps setting her up on blind dates, worried her daughter will never marry.

While waiting for a blind date, Pallavi meets Sandeep (Omar Maskati), and the two get to know each other. Over time, they get closer, even moving in together.

At first Usha is thrilled, but a bunch of red flags start popping up, causing her deep concern for Pallavi. Usha knows from her own history that a guy like Sandeep is dangerous, but her daughter refuses to listen to her mother’s warnings.

Now this may seem like a typical stalker movie, but there is more to the situation. Usha has been having flashbacks to being attacked as a young girl (shown at the beginning of the movie), and is certain Sandeep is actually a reincarnation of the man who attacked her.

Evil Eye is a slow burn psychological thriller about the possibility of reincarnation, toxic behavior, and the lengths a mother will go to to save her daughter. It weaves in many Indian ideologies into a modern day horror film, and Mani and Choudhury are excellent in their roles.

I’m giving Evil Eye a 3.5 out of 5 stars.
