Zengrrl’s Movie Review: I’m Your Woman (2020).. #ImYourWoman #AmazonStudios #RachelBrosnahan

I'm Your Woman

I’m Your Woman is a crime film set in the late 70s, centered around the character of Jean (played magnificently by Rachel Brosnahan), who is married to Eddie (Bill Heck), a thief.

Jean is living a sheltered life when Eddie pops in with a mysterious baby boy and tells her to take care of it. Shortly after, Cal, one of Eddie’s associates, comes to the house and says Eddie is in trouble and she needs to come with him for her safety.

What transpires is a woman on the run story mixed with a fish out of water element.

Jean is suddenly thrust into a shady world and has to navigate purely on instinct. She’s never truly convinced who she should trust…or even what it really going on.

Director Julia Hart also wrote the screenplay with Jordan Horowitz, and it’s a downbeat slice of life mixed with a 70s gangster element. That said, there are more introspective moments than violent shoot-outs (though those happen towards the end of the film).

I’m never sure why Jean makes some of the choices she does, but the character and the story work with Brosnahan at the lead. Jean has to make some quick choices, and Brosnahan conveys the mental struggle with subtle nuances in her body language.

Arinzé Kene as Cal and Marsha Stephanie Blake as his wife Teri (whom Jean finds she has a surprising connection to) are also stellar, and provide a nice counterpart to Jean.

I’m Your Woman isn’t a gangster film…it’s more of a slow build character study that happens to be set in a world of crime. It’s worth watching for Brosnahan’s performance alone.

I’m giving I’m Your Woman a 3.5 out 5 stars. It’s currently streaming on Amazon Prime (affiliate link).
