We Can Be Heroes, written and directed by Robert Rodriguez, is sort of a sequel to his 2005 family film, The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D.
In this new installment, Earth’s mightiest heroes are abducted by aliens, and their children have to step in and save the day.
One hour before the attack, Missy Moreno (YaYa Gosselin), daughter of Marcus Moreno (Pedro Pascal), is at home with her dad when news breaks out of the attack.
Marcus, who retired from the Heroics, warns Mrs. Granada (Priyanka Chopra Jonas, who sashays into every scene), the leader of the Heroics program, that the threat is larger than expected. She then decides to send all the Heroics, including sword-master Marcus, to fight the aliens.
After the Heroics are captured, Missy is taken to Heroics Headquarters and is placed in a vault with the other children of the Heroics. Each of the children have at least one superpower gleaned from their parents, including Sharkboy and Lavagirl’s precocious daughter, Guppy (Vivien Blair).
Missy is the only one without a superpower, since her dad’s power is a honed skill, but she is super smart and realizes the aliens will be after them next.
What follows is a fun brightly-colored romp as the kids learn to utilize their skills, and work together to defeat the aliens so they can not only save their parents, but the whole world.
There are some nice kid-friendly lessons about using your differences to be stronger together, and in believing in yourself, but mostly We Can Be Heroes is goofy and silly and definitely made for kids (though adults will enjoy some of the humor and definitely the Heroics cameos).
It’s a superhero story that doesn’t take itself too seriously, and I enjoyed it a lot. If you enjoyed Sharkboy and Lavagirl, or Rodriguez’s Spy Kids series of films (which also share some things with this movie), you’ll definitely want to give this a play.
I’m giving We Can Be Heroes a 4 out 5 stars. It’s currently streaming on Netflix, and according to a tweet, a sequel is on the way!
