The first episode of Marvel Studios’ highly anticipated series The Falcon and The Winter Soldier will begin streaming this Friday on Disney+, and here’s what you need to know before watching the show.
The six-episode series follows the adventures of Sam Wilson aka The Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), both of whom are trying to find their place in a world without their friend and mentor, Steve Rogers aka Captain America (Chris Evans), following the events of “Avengers: Endgame.”
We will learn more about Sam’s past prior to meeting Rogers in “Captain America: Winter Soldier.” In the first episode, Sam returns to his native Louisiana and reunites with his sister, Sarah Wilson (Adepero Oduye), and his nephews.
Both characters will be dealing with PTSD, as soldiers and as Avengers, and Marvel says they will be depicting the experience respectively and properly.
Joining The Falcon and The Winter Soldier are two MCU movie characters: Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp) and “Captain America: Civil War” villain Zemo (Daniel Brühl).
The show will also introduce another Marvel character from the comics, John Walker (Wyatt Russell), one of the highest-ranking soldiers in the U.S. military. Russell’s character is described as patriotic, strong, and well-intentioned, but whether he will stay true to his comic book origins remains to be seen.
As with WandaVision, the show’s creators are taking a different approach to telling the story. Though there are six episodes, they actually filmed the show as a six-hour movie, with several layers of the story being told at once.
It will be interesting to see how Sam and Bucky relate to each other without the calming and connective influence of Rogers in the mix.
