Zengrrl's Movie Review: Synchronic

Synchronic is a 2019 indie sci-fi movie that was just added to Netflix, giving me an opportunity to see it.

In it, two New Orleans paramedics and long-time friends, Steve (Anthony Mackie) and Dennis (Jamie Dornan), have started encountering strange calls where people are injured or dead from unexplained causes.

The common denominator is that all have taken a new drug called Synchronic.

After Dennis’ oldest daughter disappears, Steve stumbles upon a terrifying truth about the supposed psychedelic drug that will challenge everything he knows about reality — and the flow of time itself.

Zengrrl's Movie Review: Synchronic - Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan

I loved the time travel via drug premise though it does require a leap of faith about the science used to explain how it works.

The execution of the story is what drags this movie down. It’s dour and depressing. Even the cinematography is dark and washed out in coloring.

Steve – who finds out he has cancer at the beginning of the film – and Dennis constantly seem to be in a bad mood about something. The cops they encounter are apathetic and dull. Everybody is snappng at each other. Ugh.

But if you can get past the lack of levity, Synchronic has a fascinating story and good acting from its leads.

I’m giving Synchronic a 3 out of 5 stars.
