Zengrrl's Movie Review: Secret Magic Control Agency

Netflix’s Secret Magic Control Agency is an animated family film that reimagines the legendary characters of Hansel & Gretel as secret agents in a world of magic.

We meet top agent Gretel (Sylvana Joyce) as she confronts a ringmaster of keeping magical creatures in cages, which is forbidden by the Secret Magic Control Agency. As she frees the creatures, one of them, a mermaid, offers her an amulet as thanks. This becomes important later in the movie.

Gretel is then assigned to the case of the missing King, who is believed to have been abducted by black magic.

Agent Stepmother orders her to work with her disowned brother Hansel (Nicholas Corda) on the case, believing his supposed magical abilities and knowledge of thievery would be beneficial for the mission.

As the two investigate, Hansel’s impulsiveness constantly gets the duo into trouble from which Gretel somehow always manages to get them out of.

Zengrrl's Movie Review: Secret Magic Control Agency

The story does incorporate the original legend of the siblings, and the evil gingerbread house witch even makes an appearance. There’s also the true witch villain though she’s in the form of a bubbly blonde bombshell with an apron (not a spoiler – she’s revealed early on).

Kidnap plot aside, the real heart of the movie is Hansel & Gretel mending their division and learning the truth of what separated them all those years ago.

Secret Magic Control Agency is cute, but feels a little flat and one-note. Most of the humor comes from Hansel’s misdeeds and sight gags, and is definitely aimed at younger children (though we big kids get a few laughs thrown at us).

It’s a good family movie but I’m only giving Secret Magic Control Agency a 3 out of 5 stars. It is currently streaming on Netflix.
