Zengrrl's Series Review: Almost Paradise

Almost Paradise is a crime drama series set in the Phillipines that originally aired on the WGN channel. I recently discovered it on IMDb TV and binged the whole season in a day.

Christian Kane, one of my favorite actors, stars as former DEA Agent Alex Walker, who was forced into retirement for reasons revealed throughout the season.

He moves to the island of Cebu in the Philippines, where he purchases a hotel gift shop in the hopes of managing his stress and high blood pressure so he can continue to receive his pension.

Unfortunately the criminal element on the island attracts his attention, and he ends up pairing up with a pair of local detectives Kai Mendoza (Samantha Richelle) and Ernesto Almares (Arthur Acuña) to bring them to justice.

Zengrrl's Series Review: Almost Paradise

Almost Paradise isn’t groundbreaking TV, but it’s an enjoyable binge for fans of crime drama with a sense of humor.

The action sequences/fight scenes are done well, and I appreciated the respect shown for the Philippine culture and people. Filmed on location, the scenery is nice to look at, too.

If you are a fan Kane’s other shows Leverage and The Librarians, you’ll enjoy this series. Especially since all three shows are produced by Dean Devlin.

No word if there will be a season 2, but I’m giving Almost Paradise season 1 a 4 out of 5 stars.

Cast: Christian Kane, Samantha Richelle, Arthur Acuña, Nonie Buencamino, Ces Quesada, Sophia Reola
