“Loki,” the new Disney+ series based on the popular Marvel character, debuts on the streamer June 9, and it continues the adventures of the God of Mischief.
Here are 10 things you need to know before you watch it.
] Actor Tom Hiddleston reprises the role of Loki (a good thing, otherwise the fandom would probably riot).
] The series takes place after the events of the 2019 movie “Avengers: Endgame.”
] BUT…that means this series version of Loki is the one from the attack of New York in 2012’s “The Avengers.”
] How? In “Endgame,” after he was captured, there was a scuffle in the Avengers tower lobby for the briefcase holding the Tessaract (the cosmic cube housing the Space Stone). Due to the actions of the time traveling Ant Man and Tony Stark, with an assist by the 2012 Hulk upset at taking the stairs, the Tessaract broke free of the briefcase and landed at Loki’s feet. Of course, he promptly used it to escape through a wormhole.
] So this series version of Loki is the one who just led the Battle of New York, full of rage and deceit. God of Mischief, indeed.
] Not so fast though. From the trailers Disney+ has released, Loki will be apprehended by the Time Variance Authority – TVA for short – a bureaucratic organization that exists outside of time and space, and monitors the state of the MCU’s timeline.
] The TVA gives Loki a choice: face being erased from existence due to being a “time variant”, or help fix the timeline and stop a greater threat. While he’s shown he’ll do anything to save his own skin, I can’t think of anything Loki would hate more than being forced to help.
] Loki’s TVA handler is Mobius M. Mobius played by Owen Wilson, looking very much like an older Howard Stark. Fun fact: Owen’s brother Luke Wilson plays Pat Dugan aka S.T.R.I.P.E in the DC Comics series Stargirl, so there’s a little fandom rivalry there.
] Mobius reports to Ravonna Renslayer (played by Award-winning actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw), a former Hunter of the TVA who rose from the ranks to become a respected judge. Renslayer is assisted by Hunter B-15 (played by Wunmi Mosaku). Sophia Di Martino and Richard E. Grant are also in the cast, but their characters haven’t been revealed.
] Since the show’s core will be about time travel, it’s possible we may meet Loki’s from different timelines and realities, which could open the door to interesting cameos.
