Disney and Pixar’s ‘Turning Red’ To Skip Theaters for Disney+

Disney and Pixar Turning Red

In somewhat disappointing news, Disney and Pixar have announced their next film, “Turning Red,” will skip the theaters and stream on Disney+.

The film had been given a theater date of March 11, 2022, but it will hit the streamer on that date instead.

Disney and Pixar’s “Turning Red” introduces Mei Lee (voice of Rosalie Chiang), a confident, dorky 13-year-old torn between staying her mother’s dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence.

One morning, she finds that whenever she gets overexcited or over-stressed, she “poofs” into a giant red panda bear. Even worse, it seems her parents knew about this curse and didn’t tell her.

Her protective, if not slightly overbearing mother, Ming (voice of Sandra Oh), tries to help her, but Mei has her boy-band loving friends to back her up.

“Turning Red’ is directed by Academy Award® winner Domee Shi, who directed my favorite Pixar short “Bao”.

It’s the third Pixar movie to skip theaters and go straight to Disney+, after “Soul” and “Luca.”

Disney has cited the success of “Soul” and “Luca” on Disney+ and “the delayed box office recovery, particularly for family films” as the reason for the change. In international markets where Disney+ is not yet available, the film will be released theatrically, with premiere dates to be announced.

At least we’ll get to see the film, instead of it just being postponed.

Here is the trailer for “Turning Red”:
